Bus Shelter, Long Beach Transit Mall, 2011
As part of the City of Long Beach Transit Mall project, eight bus shelters were required from Pine Ave. to Long Beach Blvd. AQX was retained as a member of the project team to provide structural engineering services for these bus shelters and led to the following accomplishments:
Caisson Design – Due to the unique soil conditions and limited access space for pad footing sizes, caissons were used to support the cantilevered steel tubes, supporting the bus shelter steel framed roof system with diagonal cables.
Foundation Design – Foundation design was challenging due to interference of existing pipes and utilities. Pothole investigation was conducted to identify the locations of existing pipes and their sizes. Different of types and shapes of pile caps with caissons were designed accordingly to avoid surcharge to the existing utilities. Base plates, anchorage of anchor bolts, pile caps and caissons were incorporated to resist overturning moment of steel tube columns.
Design Award – AQX earned the “Best 2011 Project” award by ENR California as a member of the project team.
